Like their selection method for inclusion on the Best Lawyers in America© list, the Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” list is the result of a thorough, peer-reviewed process.
First, a firm must have an attorney who has been recognized by Best Lawyers in a “Best Law Firms” ranked practice area and metropolitan location. Next, the Best Lawyers begins the formal submission process but emailing submission packets to firms at the beginning of the Year.
The submission packets include:
- Eligible practice and metro locations
- A Law Firm Survey
- Instructions regarding sending lists to clients and professional references for surveys
Finally, the firm’s clients and professional references complete a survey concerning the candidate firm’s “expertise, responsiveness, understanding of a business and its needs, cost-effectiveness, civility, and whether they would refer another client to the firm.” Client and professional reference responses and feedback are kept confidential and never publically shared.
After compiling data, Best Lawyers® review and evaluates the data into a score for each candidate office, organizing firms into tiers the following tiers per location:
- Metro Tiers 1-3
- National Tiers 1-3
- Law Firm of the Year
Best Lawyers® then release the results of the selection process to the public on November 1st annually online at https://bestlawfirms.usnews.com.
